Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye disease that blurs your sharp, central vision. It happens when aging damages the macula—the part of the retina responsible for clear, straight-ahead vision needed for reading, driving, and recognizing faces.
AMD is a leading cause of vision loss for older adults, typically affecting people over the age of 50.
Types of AMD
-
Dry AMD: The most common form, where the macula thins over time, causing gradual vision loss.
-
Wet AMD: A less common but more severe form, where abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina, causing faster, more noticeable vision damage.
Common Symptoms
-
Blurring or a blind spot in the center of your vision.
-
Straight lines appearing wavy or distorted.
-
Colors looking less bright than before.
Prevention & Management
While there is no permanent cure for advanced AMD, early detection is key. You can protect your vision through regular eye exams, a healthy diet rich in leafy greens, quitting smoking, and using specialized vitamin supplements (like AREDS2) as recommended by an eye doctor.
